Welcome to Bishan Town                                   Ang Mo Kio | Toa Payoh

History
Bishan town was originally known as Kampong San Teng, a quiet and rural area overrun with wild grass and plants. This area included an old cemetery called Pi Shan Ting meaning 'Pavilion on The Greens'. According to HDB, the name has inspired the subsequent design of apartment blocks with distinctive and colourful roof forms to reflect Bishan's pavilion heritage. Besides roof terraces in Bishan East and pitched roofs in Bishan North, the romance of the pavilions of old can also be seen in the design of precinct entrances, linkways and rest areas.

Location and Layout
Centrally located in Singapore, Bishan town is bounded on the north and east by Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1 and Central Expressway, on the west by Upper Thomson Road and on the south by Braddell Road; with Marymount Road and Bishan Road cutting northwards in parallel across the town. The town is nestled between Ang Mo Kio Town and Toa Payoh Town, with close proximity to the MacRitchie Reservoir.

Transport Facilites
Part of Bishan's attraction lies in its easy accessibility to and from other parts of Singapore. With the Central Expressway to the east, and Bishan MRT station/ Bus Interchange located in the town centre, Bishan is just 10 minutes away from the City. Getting around within the town itself is quick and convenient. A comprehensive network of trunk bus services and feeder services provide radial links between the town centre and the rest of Bishan.

Town Attractions
As a self-contained residential suburb, Bishan offers a complete living environment that caters to the varied interests and needs of its residents. Neighbourhood centres offer ample choices for everyday shopping convenience. These include the old shophouses lining Upper Thomson Road, as many have now given a new lease of life by their owners.

Residents also can catch a movie or enjoy downtown shopping at Bishan Junction 8, a modern shopping-cum-entertainment complex located in the town centre.

Apart from shopping and fine dining, residents can enjoy a healthy and relaxing time at the nearby 52-hectare Bishan Park. In addition to this sprawling park with its ponds, jogging/cycling tracks, and children's play facilities, another favourite avenue for outdoor activities is the uniquely-designed Bishan Swimming Complex.

Community Living
Bishan town today is home to more than 90,000 people.

The planning of Bishan town successfully integrates pockets of private residential estates (including older estates like Thomson Garden, Windsor Park and Adelphi Park Estates) with public housing flats.

Public housing flats now forms the bulk of residences. There are 5,000 to 6,000 flats to a neighbourhood. Within a neighbourhood, residences are planned around precincts each comprising five to nine apartment blocks. Each precinct houses 500 to 800 families and is designed with plenty of opportunities for neighbours to interact and socialise.

New facilities and amenities such as schools, neighbourhood parks, town and neighbourhood centres, and buildings for institutional uses such as community centres, and religious worship, have turned this town into a bustling suburb.
